Gillard Doesn’t Understand Shire Families
In the upcoming sitting of parliament the Labor government will be seeking to drive more than one dagger into the cost of living of Shire families.
Putting aside the Carbon Tax legislation for a moment, the Fairer Private Health Insurance Incentives Bills will be up for consideration. This Bill seeks to rip $2.8billion of support from families that have taken out private health insurance to reduce the strain on our public health system.
This includes 91,414 people in the Hughes electorate that have taken out private health insurance cover.
A recent independent report produced by Deloitte, shows that the Government’s changes would lead to $3.8 billion in extra costs for the public system, a 400 percent increase in elective surgery waiting times and an additional 10 percent rise in premiums.
The Australian reported on the 24 June that 2.4 million Australians will be directly affected by the Government’s changes and forced to pay up to $935 a year more for their health cover.
The Coalition remains firmly committed to supporting private health insurance and has continually opposed this bad policy.
These irresponsible changes have been blocked by the Senate on two previous occasions, however with the Greens taking the balance of power in July, all eyes will be on the independent MPs in the House of Representatives.
The history of this legislation displays remarkable similarities to the Carbon Tax.
“…what we rejected is this hysterical allegation that somehow we are moving towards a carbon tax,” said Wayne Swan, eerily reminiscent of Julia’s own broken promise.
Which can be compared to Nicola Roxon’s media release titled “Liberal Scare Campaign on Private Health Insurance Rebates – Federal Labor to Retain Rebates”, which included:
“Federal Labor rejects the Liberal scare campaign around the Private Health Insurance rebates”,
“Federal Labor has made it crystal clear that we are committed to retaining all of the existing Private Health Insurance rebates… and all other components of the existing private health insurance incentives scheme.”
How can Shire families trust a government that won’t be honest with the Australian people?
I will be speaking on this Bill in the next session of parliament. If you would like a copy of this speech, please contact my office on 9521 6262.
